David Warner’s NPL Debut: 16 off 10 as Kathmandu Beat Karnali

Updated

David Warner played his first Nepal Premier League match on Monday, 2 November. It was short, but Kathmandu Gorkhas won. Warner made 16 off 10 balls and took a catch as Kathmandu chased 181 to beat previously unbeaten Karnali Yaks by four wickets in Match 10. Full details are in our match report.

Warner’s innings

Warner arrived in Nepal on 1 November and went straight into the team (why he missed the opener). Chasing 181, he hit three fours in his first 10 balls, which is the powerplay hitting Kathmandu lacked when they were bowled out for 115 by Janakpur. Karnali captain Sompal Kami bowled him in the second over with the score on 18.

His catch

Warner had already made an impact in the field. Ariful Islam was scoring at twice a run a ball with 44 off 22 when he hit a catch to Warner off Shahab Alam in the seventh over. Karnali were 66 for 2 at that point and lost two more wickets for 12 runs.

The rest of the team won it

Kathmandu’s middle order did the work in the chase. Rashid Khan (50 off 33) Karan KC (44 off 20), who led the side in the opener, added 55 off 26 balls, and Jahandad Khan finished it with 24 not out off 11, including two sixes in a 17-run 19th over. Karan KC also took 1 for 35 with the ball.

Why it matters

Kathmandu were bottom of the table without a point before this game. They now have two points from two matches, and six games are left. Warner’s first 10 balls showed what he can do in the powerplay. A longer innings would make Kathmandu’s top order much harder to bowl at.
